Key moments, move by move
- Guimarães finds Madueke on the right, at the edge of Lille's box.
- Timber, the right-back, runs inside Madueke and gets the ball in the box.
- In a tight space near the byline his first touch takes him away from André.
- From a tight angle he chips it over Özer and in.
- Ødegaard, on for two minutes, wins the ball back in midfield.
- Guimarães plays Saka through down the right.
- Saka sends a low ball across the box first time.
- Eze hits it with his left foot; a slight deflection takes it past Özer.
- Ødegaard slips Havertz in behind Lille's back line.
- Havertz reaches the ball near the byline and cuts it back.
- Saka arrives about eight yards out and curls a left-foot shot inside the far post.
An hour of patience, then seven minutes from the bench
- Lille's block: a deep 4-3-3 (FotMob) that let Arsenal have the ball. Arsenal finished with 58% possession and 50 touches in Lille's box to Lille's 3 (FotMob), but went in at 0–0.
- First-half chances, no goal: Özer saved from Eze on the penalty spot (38') and pushed away Guimarães's long shot in stoppage time (LOSC, UEFA). Arteta: "We gave simple things away; bad touches, mistimed things" (TNT Sports, via beIN Sports).
- The right side opened it: Timber, back at right-back, ran inside Madueke and scored the opener at 64' with a turn and a chip from a tight angle. UEFA named him player of the match; Sofascore credits him with two key passes.
- The triple change at 65': Saka, Ødegaard and Havertz came on a minute after the opener and all three were involved in the next two goals within six minutes. Sofascore has Arsenal's second-half xG at 1.05 to Lille's 0.23.
Tactical scenes
Lille rarely tried to play through Arsenal's press. Their way out was the long ball to Ueda, who won his share of headers, but the second ball kept falling to Rice or Guimarães. Their only moments were Ueda's offside goal (24') and two efforts after the third goal.
Evidence: Lille completed 18 of their 49 long balls (37%) and made 26 passes into the final third to Arsenal's 69 (Sofascore). Ueda won six headers (Sofascore). Lille had three touches in Arsenal's box and four shots, none on target (FotMob). Sofascore match report and stats · FotMob match page

The idea: A patient 4-2-3-1 that keeps the ball around a deep block, with the right-back as a Wing-Back running inside a Winger. You need a full-back who is comfortable in the box, and a bench with a creator and a runner for the hour mark.
What FM26 can't copy: The key moment was the triple change once Lille tired, and FM26 can't set a substitution plan as a team instruction.

What if? Replay it with a different plan
Our best alternative plan: Formation 4-3-3, Ødegaard on at 46' (for Merino), not 65', Havertz on at 46' (for Gyökeres), not 65'. Start with Ødegaard as a second No.8 and bring the hour-mark changes forward to half-time. Arsenal won comfortably anyway; this plan just aims to break the block sooner. It moves Arsenal's win chance from 73% to 81% (xG 1.85–0.38 becomes 2.30–0.38). Try your own changes to formation, pressing, approach and substitutions.
The game-changer Arsenal needed
Martin Ødegaard
Arsenal had the ball for an hour but few clear chances, with Merino at No.10. Ødegaard won the ball back for Eze's goal and slipped Havertz in for Saka's within six minutes of coming on. Starting him gives that final pass for the whole game.
Michael Olise
Lille's block held for an hour because Arsenal had few players who could beat a man in a crowded box. Olise drifts in from the right on his left foot, beats a defender and picks the cut-back, which is how the late goals came.

Lille kept Arsenal out for an hour, and the bench did it again.
What's happening. Arsenal beat Lille 3–0 for a second Champions League win from two. It stayed goalless past the hour, until Timber scored. Arteta then made a triple change, and Eze and Saka added two more within seven minutes. Lille did not have a shot on target all night.
How it works. Lille defended deep, with four at the back and three midfielders close in front. A block like that protects the middle of the box. It is weaker at the side of the box, where a full-back can arrive late inside his winger, and it gets tired. Timber's goal came from the first. The triple change used the second: fresh runners against legs that had been shuffling side to side for an hour.
What the shots say. FotMob's xG has Arsenal well ahead, and most of it came after the break. One reading: Arsenal were the better side all night and Özer kept it level. The other: for a team with 50 touches in Lille's box, the first hour produced few clear chances. Both fit. Arsenal had control early and threat late, once the fresh players arrived.
