The win that set the template, and hid a question.
This was not a smash-and-grab. Arsenal created 2.19 xG to City's 0.77 while having only 41% of the ball. The template for the season appeared here: Tzolis wide on the left, Calafiori running inside from left-back, and quick passes into the space those two runs open. All three goals came from that side.
The hidden question is about the ball. Arsenal were brilliant when City had it: they defended in a compact block and broke into space. Five weeks later at Brighton, Arsenal had 60% of the ball and faced a press. That is a different problem, and this game didn't test it.
Tzolis was the real signing of the summer on this evidence. Two assists in his first competitive game, both from reading space that others didn't see.
