Premier League · Matchday 6Sat 10 Oct 202617:30 BST · 01:30 KST (Sun)Old Trafford

Bottom-of-the-table Spurs keep the ball but can't score. United create plenty but can't finish. Something has to give.

Win probability

Man United win 69% · draw 18% · Tottenham win 14%. Expected goals 2.36 – 0.96.

What to watch

  • Who is fit in the middle: Fernandes, Mainoo and Rashford all left international duty injured. Without Fernandes and Mainoo, United lose the two players who drive their possession game, with Atlético away three days later.
  • United's defence after losing the ball: Spurs' weakness is transitions, but so is United's: Everton in the 96th minute, Brighton's comeback, and Neville's "walk out of possession". The team that gets set faster behind the ball probably wins.
  • Pressing Spurs' build-up: De Zerbi wants to be pressed. If United jump together, turnovers come 20 metres from goal. If they're late, Spurs play through the first line into space.
  • Chance quality: United lead the league in shots (113) but have the fifth-lowest conversion rate (7.1%). Against a side that concedes 1.56 xG a game, fewer and better shots would count for more than volume.

Tottenham: how they play

  • Shape: De Zerbi builds up in 3-2 / 2-3 shapes that invite the press, then play through or around it (Squawka). Spurs have had 57–64% of the ball in all five league games (Sky Sports).
  • Pressing: an aggressive hybrid press triggered by the front line, which switches to man-to-man once the first wave is beaten (Squawka's analysis of De Zerbi's first months at the club).
  • Weakness, transitions: Brentford made 3.87 xG against them on the opening day, and Villa won 3–2 at Spurs with 36% of the ball, mostly on the counter.
  • Finishing: two league goals in five games, both late in the Villa defeat (Gallagher 86', van Hecke 90+8'), from 5.00 xG.
  • Key players: Gallagher, Tonali, Van de Ven (captain), Kudus and van Hecke. Porro, Kulusevski, Mudryk, Odobert and Xavi Simons are injured.

United's start is partly bad luck. The rest is a quality problem.

Five points from five league games is United's joint-worst start since 2014/15, and they sit 12th, ten points behind City. Opta's expected-points table puts them fourth on 8.4. They lead the league in shots (113) and touches in the opposition box, have hit the woodwork six times, and have scored 8 from 9.89 xG. On that reading, the table is harsh on them and the finishing will turn.

Take out the 5–2 against Ipswich (4.77 xG), though, and the other four league games produced 5.12 xG, or 1.28 a game. Last season United averaged about 1.76. At Everton they made 0.69; against City, with an extra man for 67 minutes, 1.00. At Fulham, 29 shots added up to just 1.60 xG, about 0.06 per shot. United aren't just missing chances. Most of their shots are poor ones.

The defence is the bigger worry. Across all seven games United have conceded 11 goals from 9.78 xG against (1.40 a game, up from 1.26 in the league last season). They have also kept giving up late goals: Ipswich in the 91st minute, Everton in the 96th, and three unanswered after leading Brighton 2–0 in the Carabao Cup. Gary Neville's line after Fulham, that he had "never seen a Man Utd team walk out of possession as much as that", matches the numbers.

RiskBruno Fernandes (muscle), Rashford, Mainoo and Šeško all missed international duty, and United play four games in 11 days from 10 October, including Atlético away. If the spine isn't fit, the 'finishing will turn' argument won't have time to play out.

How to read the diagrams

Every diagram plays on a loop like a short GIF: the dots are players moving, the white ball travels with the play, and lines trace where the ball and the runners went. Goal diagrams show the scoring team attacking up the page. Use Pause to freeze any moment. Diagrams are reconstructions from match reports and analysis, not tracking data, so positions are approximate.
