What if? Replay it with a different plan
Our best alternative plan: Formation 4-4-2, Zirkzee on at 60' not 83' (for Dalot). React to the red card straight away: two strikers against a narrow ten-man block, then Zirkzee for a full-back after an hour. It improves United's chances a lot, but City could still have scored from their long balls. It moves Manchester United's win chance from 32% to 40% (xG 1.00–1.10 becomes 1.35–1.20). For 44 minutes against ten men, United played without a striker in the box, and ten of their 16 shots came from distance. Šeško was the one player in the squad who attacks the space behind and near post. That is what a narrow, deep block leaves open, and what Cunha as a false nine couldn't do.
Harry Kane
United needed two things against a deep, narrow block: a striker to occupy Guéhi and Dias, and someone to play the final pass when those centre-backs held their line. Kane does both. He drops in to pass through the lines, then attacks crosses, and he is one of the best finishers from the box edge in Europe.

The officials made a mistake. United's attack made a bigger one.
Manchester United have a genuine grievance. Pro Ref admitted that VAR should have sent Michael Oliver to the monitor, because Enzo Fernández dived at the cross from an offside position right next to Martínez. A draw would have been a fair result: the xG was 1.00 to 1.10.
But the xG is the problem. United played against ten men for 67 minutes and made 1.00 xG from 16 shots, with only three on target. Most of the shots came from distance. City did exactly what Maresca said they would: they dropped deep, left no space in behind and waited. Without a runner to aim at, United moved the ball around the edge of the box, and the best chances they made were two efforts that hit the post and one late one-on-one.
The bench is where this game was lost. Coaches' Voice describes a 2-2-6 with no fixed striker against a narrow block. Šeško, the only striker who attacks the box, didn't come on until the 67th minute, and United made only two changes all afternoon. Maresca changed City's shape straight after the red card, moving Cherki to the right (Read Man Utd), and again at half-time. Carrick didn't react until City were already ahead.
