The idea: A two-man base lets Fernandes roam behind a false nine who presses and drops, and the midfield pair keep the ball in the opponent's half. You need a No. 10 who arrives in the box, and a left-back who can defend 1v1 when the full-backs go high: Ipswich Town scored when Shaw couldn't.

What if? Replay it with a different plan
Our best alternative plan: Dorgu on at half-time (for Shaw), Yoro on at 60' (for Martínez). Keep the shape and the press that won the ball for the equaliser, but fix the left side at half-time with Dorgu and add Yoro's pace. United still win; they just give less away. Fatawu beat Shaw one against one for the opener and kept targeting that side; United in Focus and The Peoples Person both singled out Shaw. Dorgu came on only at 80', and on the wing for Rashford. At left-back from half-time he is quicker to recover and more used to defending wide 1v1s, which closes Ipswich Town's best route to goal.

Ipswich Town's most dangerous move was Fatawu running at United's left-back, and it produced the opener. Mendes pairs recovery pace with strong 1v1 defending, so a winger who knocks it past him usually gets caught. He would also still give United the attacking width Shaw provides.

The attack earned this. 4.77 xG is the biggest number Manchester United have produced this season: 33 shots, 11 on target and 44 touches in Ipswich Town's box. Once Cunha won the ball off Núñez for the equaliser, Mainoo and Tielemans pinned Ipswich back, and three goals in 12 second-half minutes settled it.
Now look at the other end. Ipswich Town made 2.06 xG from nine shots, about 0.23 per shot, against United's 0.14. A promoted side at Old Trafford created more per attempt than the home team. The opener came from Fatawu beating Shaw one against one, the second from Martínez giving the ball away. Neither is bad luck.
