Two of Brighton's three goals came from long balls that a rotated back line didn't deal with: Hadjam's pass behind for Kostoulas and the ball United couldn't clear before Groß scored. Maguire's strengths are winning first contacts, organising the line and dealing with direct play. He sat on the bench while a 2–0 lead disappeared.
Moisés Caicedo
United lost control of the space in front of their defence: Brighton won the second balls and Groß had time at the edge of the box. Caicedo is one of the Premier League's best at winning the ball back and covering ground in exactly that zone. He is the kind of player who protects a 2–0 lead.

This wasn't a freak. Brighton were the better team for 80 minutes.
The two early goals made it look like a collapse. It wasn't. Manchester United's goals came from a debutant's dribble and a rebound, and after that Brighton & Hove Albion had 2.14 xG to United's 1.20 and 40 touches in the United box to 17. Hürzeler said Brighton "completely controlled the game" by the end, and the numbers back him up.
The way Brighton scored matters more than the scoreline. The first two goals came from long passes that United's rotated defence didn't deal with: a ball over the top for Kostoulas, and a clearance that went nowhere before Groß scored. You can't just blame Darlow, Heaven and Mazraoui for being back-ups. Hadjam "had time" to pick out Kostoulas (Brighton's own report), and Groß had space at the edge of the box: the midfield in front of the back four didn't protect it.
It also fits a pattern. United had already conceded in the 91st minute against Ipswich and the 96th at Everton, and Neville's complaint at Fulham four days later was about how they defend without the ball. The derby showed United struggle to break teams down. This game showed they also struggle to protect a lead.
