A new back three, a Mbeumo goal and a better first half, then Leeds took over: six games without a win.

Key moments, move by move
- Tielemans, the right-sided No 10, slips the ball wide to Amad.
- He keeps running: an underlapping run inside Amad takes him into the right channel.
- Amad gives it back and Tielemans hits a low, first-time cross across the six-yard box.
- Mbeumo gets in front of his marker at the near post and steers it into the far corner.
- Bogle wins a corner on Leeds' right.
- Stach swings it in and Muharemović wins the first header, flicking it on.
- The ball drops to Calvert-Lewin a few yards out, with no United player on him.
- One touch to control, then a finish past Lammens: 1–1, six minutes after the restart.
United matched Leeds man for man and aimed at their two-man midfield
- The plan. Carrick switched to a back three: Yoro, Maguire and Martínez, with Amad and Dalot as wing-backs and Tielemans and Fernandes behind Mbeumo (SI, Sky Sports). Maguire: “We wanted to match them up without the ball and go quite aggressive.” Carrick called it “a little tweak tactically, not a huge change.”
- The target. Leeds play only two in central midfield, Ampadu and Tanaka. Tielemans, pushed higher than usual, kept arriving on the right of that pair, and both of Mbeumo's chances came from his crosses: a free header wide at 27', then the goal at 35' (Sky Sports).
- The cost on the ball. United had 39% of the ball and completed 74.2% of 345 passes, to Leeds' 83.6% of 530 (Sky Sports stats). Their best outlet was a run in behind: Amad beat the offside trap at about 30' before Trafford came out to clear. Maguire admitted they “could have been a bit braver with the ball”.
- The second half. Martínez went off at half-time with a thigh problem and Mazraoui came in, with the back three kept. Leeds pushed both wing-backs on and made 1.19 of their 1.44 xG after the break (Opta Analyst); United made 0.25 (SI). The equaliser came from a corner six minutes in.
Tactical scenes
With Martínez off and United's legs going, Leeds pushed Bogle and Gudmundsson on and kept putting the ball into the box. The equaliser came from a corner; just after the hour a scramble ended with Okafor shooting over, and before 73' Stach shot over from the edge of the area after more pressure.
Evidence: Leeds made 1.19 of their 1.44 xG in the second half (Opta Analyst), and United only 0.25 with one shot on target (SI). Leeds had 21 touches in United's box to 14 (FotMob) and attempted 29 crosses to United's 10 (Sky Sports stats). The idea: A back three that copies the opponent's shape, so every player has a direct opponent, with an Advanced Playmaker arriving on the right of a two-man midfield. You need wing-backs who can run for 90 minutes and a bench ready to change the press after the hour.
What FM26 can't copy: FM26 can't reproduce the half-time injury to Martínez or the drop in energy after a midweek game in Madrid.

What if? Replay it with a different plan
Our best alternative plan: Formation 3-5-2, Mid block, De Ligt on at 46' (for Martínez), Rashford on at 60' (for Fernandes). Keep the back three but add a third midfielder, drop the press into a mid-block after the goal, put De Ligt on at half-time and Rashford on the hour. It protects the lead better; Leeds would still be the more likely to score. It moves Manchester United's win chance from 25% to 35% (xG 0.92–1.41 becomes 0.92–0.86). Try your own changes to formation, pressing, approach and substitutions.
The game-changer Manchester United needed
Matthijs de Ligt
Martínez went off at half-time and Leeds then attempted most of their 29 crosses, equalising from a flicked-on corner. De Ligt is the strongest of United's centre-backs in the air, and a back three with him and Maguire in the middle stops the first header.
Adam Wharton
United completed 74.2% of their passes and Maguire said they lacked the bravery to take the ball under pressure. Wharton's game is receiving between pressing midfielders and turning forward, which would let United keep the ball when Leeds pushed on after half-time.
What the analysts said
“It felt like a bit of a fresh start today, in terms of where we're at.”Michael Carrick (Sky Sports)
“We could have been a bit braver with the ball and taken the ball under pressure.”Harry Maguire (Sky Sports)
“We lacked a bit in our decision-making in the first half, we added clarity in the second half.”Daniel Farke (Sky Sports)
“I think we were unlucky not to win the game.”Dominic Calvert-Lewin (Sky Sports)
The new shape won the first half, and Leeds won the second.
What's happening. A 1–1 draw at Elland Road and six games without a win. Mbeumo put United ahead before half-time from a Tielemans cross. Calvert-Lewin levelled from a corner early in the second half, and after that Leeds had the better of it. United took the lead and drew for the third league game running.
How it works. Carrick copied Leeds' shape so that every United player had a direct opponent. That makes pressing simple: you know whom to close down. It also lets your No 10s attack a midfield of two. The cost is running. Every lost duel opens a gap, and the wing-backs have to cover the whole flank. When legs go, the opponent's wing-backs get free, and Leeds crossed far more than United after the break.
What the shots say. Leeds made more xG, almost all of it after half-time. United's attack faded to very little in the second half. One reading: away at a strong home side, a point from a new system is fair. The other: the system works for an hour, and then it relies on Lammens and a crowded box. With Como away on Wednesday, the legs question matters.
