Good build-up, empty box, loose balls at the end

  • Manchester United's build-up: a back three from the two centre-backs plus a full-back or pivot, with Cunha dropping into midfield to form a diamond of four central receivers. Tielemans dropped to progress play, Mainoo received facing forward (Tactical Football Analysis).
  • Everton's block: Moyes' side defended in a 5-4-1 that became a 5-3-2 when a midfielder stepped up. United's best route was behind Röhl on Everton's right, where Shaw and Rashford kept finding space (Read Everton).
  • Low quality both ways: 14 United shots made 0.69 xG, 18 Everton shots made 1.01. Read Everton's model puts Everton's two goals at 0.04 and 0.03 xG; their best chance was Barry's first-half header from Röhl's cross (0.38), which went over.
  • The last 20 minutes: Grealish and Hackney changed Everton after 66'. Carrick said "a few more balls into the box and a few decisions" made it harder when United "should've seen it out". Both Everton goals began with loose balls United didn't secure.

The idea: Dalot tucks in to make a back three, Shaw goes high on the left and Cunha drops to form a midfield diamond, so the build-up always has a spare man. It needs a real box striker somewhere; without one the structure produces possession but few good shots, and United only threatened the box once Šeško arrived.

What FM26 can't copy: FM26 can't reproduce who fails to clear a loose ball in the 96th minute.

What if? Replay it with a different plan

Our best alternative plan: Formation 4-3-3, Šeško on at 55' not 70' (for Cunha), Santos on at 75' not 84' (for Mainoo). A third midfielder to win loose balls outside the box, Šeško earlier to attack Shaw's crosses, and Santos on as soon as Hackney arrives. It trims Everton's second phases; it doesn't stop a 0.03 xG screamer. It moves Manchester United's win chance from 24% to 33% (xG 0.69–1.01 becomes 0.79–0.76). Try your own changes to formation, pressing, approach and substitutions.

The game-changer Manchester United needed

From the squad

Benjamin Šeško

Centre-forward · on the bench, came on at 70' and scored

United built up well, but with Cunha dropping into midfield nobody pinned Everton's centre-backs or attacked crosses, and 14 shots made 0.69 xG. Šeško came on at 70' and headed in Shaw's cross 18 minutes later. From the start he gives Shaw and Rashford, who kept getting behind Röhl, a target in the box.

From another club

Adam Wharton

Central midfielder · Crystal Palace

Both Everton goals came from loose balls around United's box in the last 13 minutes, after Hackney and Grealish had taken over the midfield. Wharton's strength is keeping the ball under pressure and choosing the next pass. At 2–1 up United needed someone to hold the ball and slow the game down, not just clear it.

What the analysts said

“…a few more balls into the box and a few decisions we made it more difficult for us when we should've seen it out really.”Michael Carrick
“I thought Man Utd played better than they have done in their other games. The first goal we concede is shabby.”David Moyes
“I thought if anyone was going to go on and win the game after we equalise it would be us.”David Moyes
Column · Our take

Two wonder goals, but United kept handing Everton the ball to hit.

It's tempting to file this under bad luck. Everton scored with shots worth 0.04 and 0.03 xG: a 20-year-old's first goal and a debutant's first Premier League goal since December 2018 (Opta Analyst). Carrick said as much: two great strikes, no clear chances given away. At 0.69 to 1.01 xG, a draw was a fair result.

The problem is how Manchester United created. The build-up worked: a back three, Cunha dropping to make a diamond, Tielemans and Mainoo at different heights. But 14 shots made only 0.69 xG, and the best moment was Mbeumo beating two men on his own. With Cunha deep, nobody attacked the box until Šeško came on at 70', and he scored from Shaw's cross 18 minutes later.

The ending is the familiar part. Both Everton goals started with loose balls United didn't secure: one off Martínez, one from Mazraoui's poked clearance. United led for eight minutes at the end and still let a loose ball fall 25 yards out in the 96th. That's game management, and it matches the late goals they conceded against Ipswich Town and, ten days later, Brighton & Hove Albion.

RiskShots worth 0.04 and 0.03 xG rarely go in. Most weeks the same loose balls would cost United nothing, so the 'can't close games' reading rests partly on two exceptional strikes.

Bottom-of-the-table Tottenham Hotspur keep the ball but can't score. United create plenty but can't finish. Something has to give.
