A 1.04 xG away win is a good sign in August.
Defensively this was close to perfect: Villa had seven shots, none on target, and 0.33 xG. Arsenal's press kept Villa's build-up on one side, and the bench shut the game down. Arteta's late midfield trio completed 35 of 38 passes between them.
Going forward it was thin: seven shots and 1.04 xG. The winning goal came from the one pattern that kept working, Calafiori running from inside to outside behind the defence. The half-time change also mattered. Tzolis was booked early, and Eze came on and played the pass.
Three days later Martinelli was sold. Look at this game again with that in mind: against a high line, Arsenal's only run in behind came from their left-back.
