The counter-press, backed by a high line
- Win it back straight away. FC Bayern's own analysis says counter-pressing was the key: whenever Union won the ball, Bayern's nearest players went straight at it until they had it back. Union had three shots and five touches in Bayern's box all game.
- A high line behind the press. With both full-backs pushed on, the centre-backs held a line near halfway. Union's clearances went straight back to Bayern instead of relieving the pressure.
- Kim Min-jae after the break. He replaced the booked Upamecano and played higher than usual. According to FotMob, most of his touches came around halfway and in Union's half, and he completed 30 of 34 passes.
- Olise from the right. He had six shots and 106 touches (FotMob). Two of his goals came from almost the same spot: the right edge of the box, curling onto his left foot.

The finishing made it seven. The pressing is what will last.
Bayern scored seven goals from 3.77 xG, so the finishing added about three goals to the score. Most of the extra came from Olise: two curlers from the edge of the box and a goal after rounding the keeper. Players of his quality beat the averages, but nobody scores seven from this many chances every week.
The number that will last is Union's: 0.34 xG from three shots, and five touches in Bayern's box across 90 minutes. That came from the counter-press. Union's own left-back, Rothe, said Bayern even ran to take throw-ins. With the centre-backs holding a line near halfway, every loose ball landed at a Bayern player's feet.
Kim Min-jae's 45 minutes fit that picture. Coming on at half-time with Bayern 3–0 up, he was asked to defend high up the pitch rather than in his own box, and he completed 30 of 34 passes. It was a low-risk half, not a statement, but it showed he can play this role for Kompany. Bayern will need it in October, when rotation is unavoidable.
