- Six changes, two goals down. Kompany changed six players from Augsburg (Bundesliga.com): Urbig in goal for Neuer, Laimer and Brown at full-back, Karl behind Kane. Viking scored from a Tripić corner after about 70 seconds and from Botheim's long pass for Christiansen at 38'. Laimer: "beaten by one pass over 60 metres".
- Viking's deep 4-3-3. Viking had 34% of the ball and sat deep. They blocked 13 of Bayern's 25 shots, made 39 clearances to Bayern's 20 and 26 tackles to 9 (Sofascore). Østbø made five saves.
- Three changes at half-time, goals from the right. Upamecano, Davies and Saibari came on for Tah, Brown and Karl. Bayern scored three in 17 minutes, all from the right: Laimer won the penalty (54'), Kimmich crossed after a short corner for Kane's header (60'), and Kane's clipped pass sent Laimer in to set up Díaz (71').
- Ten men and a back-post header. Olise was booked twice in about a minute, first for a foul, then for throwing the ball at Tripić. Viking brought on three players at 85' and kept crossing; Tripić, who made 19 crosses (Sofascore), found Herman Haugen at the back post in the 90th minute.

The idea: Kane as a Deep-Lying Forward drops off and looks for a Wing-Back running in behind from right-back; a Deep-Lying Playmaker feeds him and crosses from the same side. You need a forward who can pass long and a full-back with the legs to keep making the run.
What FM26 can't copy: FM26 can't reproduce a second yellow card for throwing the ball, or a match where one side scores three goals from less than one goal's worth of chances.

What if? Replay it with a different plan
Our best alternative plan: Pavlović on at 74' (for Bischof), Ito on at 83' for Davies (not Saibari). Keep the press and the shape that turned the game, but protect 3–2 after the red card: Pavlović in front of the defence and Ito at the back post. It does nothing about the two first-half goals. It moves FC Bayern München's win chance from 86% to 89% (xG 3.29–0.72 becomes 3.24–0.47). Try your own changes to formation, pressing, approach and substitutions.
The game-changer FC Bayern München needed
Aleksandar Pavlović
Bayern led 3–2 when Olise went off at 74'. Pavlović, who started at Augsburg, wins the ball in front of the back four and would have let Kimmich and Bischof stay in shape while Viking pushed numbers forward for their late crosses.
Joško Gvardiol
Viking scored twice with headers from Tripić's deliveries, the last at the back post on Bayern's left after Davies was late. Gvardiol is a centre-back who plays left-back: his height and timing at the far post are what that side lacked when the crosses came in.
What the analysts said
“In that situation, we maybe didn’t need to play it out from the corner, but could’ve looked for the longer option.”Vincent Kompany (FC Bayern website)
“The sending-off was obviously stupid, and we’ve spoken about it quite clearly.”Vincent Kompany (FC Bayern website)
“We made a mistake in the very first minute, giving away a set piece and the goal.”Harry Kane (FC Bayern website)
“The way we conceded the second goal is unforgiveable too, being beaten by one pass over 60 metres.”Konrad Laimer (FC Bayern website)
“The first half was basically perfect.”Bjarte Lunde Aarsheim, Viking (FC Bayern website)
Bayern fixed a bad first half in 17 minutes, then a red card gave the win away.
What's happening. Viking 3–3 Bayern. Viking led 2–0 at half-time from a corner and one long pass. After the break Kane scored twice and Luis Díaz put Bayern ahead. Then Olise was sent off for two yellow cards in a minute, and Herman Haugen headed the equaliser in the last minute.
How it works. Viking defended deep in a 4-3-3 and played long for Christiansen. Bayern's answer at half-time was three changes and more runs down the right. Laimer won the penalty, Kimmich crossed for Kane's header, and Kane's clipped pass sent Laimer in for Díaz. The cost of the high line is the other half: one long ball is enough to put a runner clean through.
What the shots say. By FotMob's numbers, Bayern's chances were worth over three goals and Viking's under one. One reading: Viking scored three from very little, and that rarely lasts. The other: a corner, a ball over the top and a late cross are exactly the chances Bayern keep giving away, and each was big once it happened.
