Kane drops to the left, runners go past him

  • Kane as the creator. Both Bayern goals came from Kane receiving on the left and finding a runner: Saibari after Kimmich's chip (55'), then Brown with a low cross to the back post (80'). FotMob credits Kane with both assists.
  • Runners beyond a line that stepped up. Bayern had 62 touches in Augsburg's box and 30 shots (FotMob). Four more goals were ruled out for offside: Stanišić in the build-up (51'), Kane's run (73'), Davies going too early (75') and Gnabry (90+6').
  • Augsburg's 3-4-2-1. Baum's side defended with five across the back and kept Fellhauer and Ribeiro high to break. Their best chances apart from the goals came from corners (17', 35'), and Dahmen was FotMob's player of the match (rating 9.0).
  • Two goals given away. The opener came from Neuer's heavy touch after the kick-off; the second from a tight-angle shot he parried to Ribeiro. Neuer took the blame for the first; Eberl said "other players were involved" in the second.

Defending

Augsburg's back line kept stepping up together as Bayern's runners set off. Four times the ball ended in the net and VAR found a runner a stride beyond the line: Stanišić in the build-up, Kane, Davies, then Gnabry.

Evidence: Bayern had the ball in the net 6 times; 4 of those goals were ruled out for offside (FC Bayern; Bundesliga.com ticker). FC Bayern: reaction · Bundesliga.com live ticker

The idea: Kane as a Deep-Lying Forward drops towards the left to receive; Saibari, Davies and later Brown run past him into the space the marking centre-back leaves. Both goals came that way. You need a striker who can turn and pass, and runners who time their runs off the passer.

What FM26 can't copy: FM26 can't reproduce the two individual errors that gave Augsburg their goals, or four goals lost to offside by a stride.

What if? Replay it with a different plan

Our best alternative plan: Formation 4-4-2, Gnabry on at 55' not 67' (for Saibari), Karl on at 67' not 87' (for Luis Díaz). Two strikers so someone attacks the near post while Kane drops left, and Gnabry and Karl on earlier against a tiring back five. It adds chances without changing the press. Nothing here fixes the two errors that decided the score. It moves FC Bayern München's win chance from 78% to 81% (xG 4.96–2.37 becomes 5.41–2.42). Try your own changes to formation, pressing, approach and substitutions.

The game-changer FC Bayern München needed

From the squad

Serge Gnabry

Winger / forward · on the bench, came on at 67'

Augsburg's back five were tiring and stepping up late. Gnabry's runs from the right into the box brought a shot off the post at 83' and two efforts ruled out for offside in only 23 minutes. Bringing him on earlier for Saibari, who had scored and was struggling with an eye knock in the first half, adds a second penalty-box runner for longer.

From another club

Erling Haaland

Centre-forward · Manchester City

Bayern made almost five goals' worth of chances and scored two: Kane hit the bar from close range, had a header saved by Dahmen, and Gnabry hit the post. With Kane dropping left to create, nobody was a full-time presence at the near post. Haaland's finishing in the six-yard box is the specific skill this game lacked.

What the analysts said

“It was an emotional rollercoaster. We had the ball in the net six times, but four didn't count.”Vincent Kompany (FC Bayern website)
“On another day, we'd win this game. We gifted them two simple chances and they punished us.”Harry Kane (FC Bayern website)
“The first goal we conceded was a silly mistake by me.”Manuel Neuer (FC Bayern website)
“You can't highlight one person today. We were strong as a collective.”Manuel Baum, Augsburg (FC Bayern website)
Column · Our take

Bayern made enough chances to win twice and gave Augsburg both goals.

What's happening. Augsburg 2–2 Bayern. Fellhauer scored after eight seconds, the fastest goal in Bundesliga history, after Neuer's heavy touch. Bayern equalised twice, took 30 shots and had four more goals ruled out for offside. Augsburg's second goal also came from a Neuer parry.

How it works. Augsburg defended with five at the back and held their line together. Bayern's answer was Kane dropping towards the left, drawing a defender out, and runners going past him. Both goals came that way. The cost of runners against a line that steps up is timing: go a stride early and the goal does not count, which happened four times.

What the shots say. By FotMob's numbers Bayern's chances were worth almost five goals, their highest this season. One reading: finishing and an inspired Dahmen cost them two points. The other: Augsburg's 2.37 is also the most any league side has made against Bayern this season, and both goals were near-certain chances once the errors happened.

RiskBoth goals conceded came from Neuer in one afternoon; one game is not a pattern. If the next few away games bring more shots against, the problem is the high line, not the goalkeeper. Corrected 14 Oct: Fellhauer shot from about ten metres (Bundesliga.com), not from close range; the goal animations now use the ticker's shot distances.
