Key moments, move by move
- Gordon goes down in Galatasaray's box, play goes on, and Galatasaray break at once.
- Leão races past Eric García down the left, into the box, and cuts the ball back.
- Batrakov shoots from the centre of the box. The ball deflects off Cancelo, wrong-foots Joan García and goes into the bottom corner.
- Davinson Sánchez's pass out of the back goes astray, and Olmo wins the ball high up the pitch.
- Olmo plays it towards the left of the box. Gordon, standing offside, leaves it to run.
- Cancelo takes it on the left of the area and curls a right-footed shot into the far corner past Çakır.
- Barça keep the ball after a corner, and it comes back to Yamal on the right.
- Yamal curls a cross into the middle of the box.
- Fermín gets in front of his marker and heads it into the bottom corner.
- Yamal gets the ball on the right, one against one with Elmalı.
- He beats Elmalı more than once in a tight space, gets a lucky rebound and carries into the box towards the byline.
- He rolls it across, and Gordon finishes low from the right side of the six-yard box, three minutes after missing a good chance.
- Yamal finds Gabriel Jesus near the edge of the box.
- Jesus flicks it on first time to Adeyemi on his left.
- Adeyemi hits it first time with his left foot, low past Çakır.
Olmo as a false nine, Yamal kept wide: patience first, then a burst
- Flick's choice up front. With Raphinha out, Olmo started as the 9, with Fermín behind him and Yamal and Gordon wide (FotMob). Flick said before kick-off: "That's why I've put Dani as a '9', he can also control the ball" (Movistar, via Yahoo Sports). Olmo kept dropping off, and he won the ball and set up Cancelo for the equaliser.
- Galatasaray's plan. Okan Buruk's 4-2-3-1 dropped into two banks of four, with Torreira and Lemina screening the middle (Goal). With the ball they went long to Osimhen and ran behind Barça's right-back. Leão beat Eric García for pace for the goal (Sports Illustrated), but Galatasaray finished with 5 shots, 0.42 xG and 9 touches in Barça's box (FotMob).
- Barça had the ball, and it took time. 71% possession, 22 shots and 35 touches in Galatasaray's box (FotMob). Rodri dropped between the centre-backs to start moves and missed only 3 of 116 passes (Sports Illustrated). Flick still wanted more: "we didn't make good decisions in the final third."
- The second half was Yamal against Elmalı. He stayed wide on the right and took on Galatasaray's left-back. Two assists came in three minutes (50', 53'), and the fourth goal came from his pass into Jesus (AFP, via beIN Sports). The animation reconstructs the build-up pattern; positions are approximate.
Tactical scenes
With little of the ball, Galatasaray skipped their own midfield. They went long towards Osimhen, then Batrakov and Leão attacked the second ball and the space behind Barça's right-back. It produced their goal, and Joan García also had to save from Osimhen and Sané (club report). Little else came of it.
Evidence: Galatasaray had 29% of the ball, 5 shots worth 0.42 xG and 9 touches in Barça's box (FotMob); their goal came from a fast break (Opta, via Yahoo Sports). FotMob match page · FC Barcelona match report · Yahoo Sports match summary (Opta)

The idea: Use a False Nine who drops to link and press, a Half-Back who drops between the centre-backs, and a Winger on the right who keeps the full-back one against one. You need a winger who can beat his man repeatedly.
What FM26 can't copy: FM26 can't reproduce the noise at RAMS Park or a goal deflecting off a defender; both shaped the first half.

What if? Replay it with a different plan
Our best alternative plan: Jesus & Adeyemi on at half-time (Olmo, Gordon), Koundé on at half-time (for Eric García). Keep the high press and the patient build-up, but start the second half with Koundé at right-back and Jesus and Adeyemi on. It wouldn't change the result; it would protect the side Leão attacked and add pace earlier. It moves FC Barcelona's win chance from 86% to 89% (xG 2.73–0.42 becomes 2.88–0.32). Try your own changes to formation, pressing, approach and substitutions.
The game-changer FC Barcelona needed
Jules Koundé
Galatasaray's only real route was behind Barça's right-back: Leão ran past Eric García for the goal and was booked for fouling him later. Koundé's recovery pace is built for that duel.
Erling Haaland
Barça had 22 shots and 35 box touches, yet Flick said the final-third decisions were poor. Haaland attacks the six-yard box for cut-backs like Yamal's, the kind of chance a false nine doesn't arrive for.
What the analysts said
“They had one chance and they scored. We managed to come back and that was very important.”Hansi Flick to Movistar (Yahoo Sports)
“That's why I've put Dani as a '9', he can also control the ball, that's what it's all about.”Hansi Flick to Movistar (Yahoo Sports)
“Lamine didn't score today, but he did provide the final pass for two goals.”Hansi Flick (Yahoo Sports)
“In this stadium, with this atmosphere, it wasn't easy, but I'm very happy.”Hansi Flick (Yahoo Sports)
Galatasaray scored first, and Barça didn't panic.
What's happening. Barcelona came from behind to win 4–1 at Galatasaray, their tenth win in ten games. Batrakov scored on the break, Cancelo levelled before half-time, and Yamal set up the next two goals early in the second half. Adeyemi added the fourth off the bench.
How it works. Against a side that defends in two banks of four and protects the middle, Barça kept the ball and moved it wide. Rodri dropped between the centre-backs, Olmo dropped off the front, and Yamal stayed wide so his full-back had to face him alone. It takes patience, and it leaves a gap: one quick break behind the right-back gave Galatasaray their goal.
What the shots say. Barça created far more: over six times Galatasaray's expected goals, and four times the shots. One reading: the plan worked, and a single break was the only flaw. The other: with this many chances, 1–1 at half-time was a warning. Flick said himself that decisions in the final third need to improve.
