Key moments, move by move
- Gordon has the ball on the left, just outside the Getafe box.
- He runs across the edge of the area past two defenders.
- His low right-footed shot takes a deflection off Mario Martín and goes under Soria. It's his first goal for Barça.
- Zaid Romero tries to dribble out of the edge of Getafe's box. Olmo and Gordon close off his route out.
- Gabriel Jesus steps in and takes the ball off him.
- He carries it into the box and finishes low across Soria into the bottom-left corner.
- Barça take a corner on the right short, and Yamal gets the ball.
- He whips a cross towards the six-yard box.
- Koundé gets away from his marker and finishes left-footed from close range. VAR checks it, and the goal stands.
Score early, then keep Getafe pinned: how Barça handled a 5-4-1
- Getafe's plan lasted 78 seconds. Bordalás set up a 5-4-1 with Azón alone up front (FotMob, LaLiga). The plan was to defend deep and go long. Gordon scored before it could settle in, and Flick said the early goal "was very important for building confidence."
- Five attackers against five defenders. Yamal and Gordon stayed wide, Olmo played between the lines, and Koundé and Espart pushed on behind them. Barça had 83% of the ball and 30 touches in Getafe's box to Getafe's 3 (FotMob). Rodri was the hub: his passes set up Eric García's shot at 19' and Gordon's at 49' (LaLiga).
- Pressing Getafe's exits. The club's report says Getafe struggled to get out of their own half in the first half. The second goal came straight from that: Olmo and Gordon closed off Zaid Romero, and Jesus took the ball off him. Bordalás called it "a gift" (EFE).
- The cost: lots of shots, few clear ones. Barça had 23 shots but 1.93 xG, about 0.08 per shot. Soria made saves from Eric García, Gavi, Koundé, Gordon and Olmo (LaLiga). The animation reconstructs the route down the left that produced the opener; positions are approximate.
Tactical scenes
Barça pushed up and pressed Getafe's centre-backs when they tried to play out. When Getafe went long, Barça's centre-backs won the ball back, so Azón was left alone. Getafe's shots came from distance, plus one just after a corner.
Evidence: Getafe had 17% of the ball, 4 shots worth 0.14 xG and 3 touches in Barça's box; 3 of the 4 shots came from outside the box. FotMob match page · LaLiga match centre (commentary) · FC Barcelona match report
Yamal didn't score, and none of his shots hit the target. But Barça's best chances kept starting with him on the right: a cross for Gavi's header, a through ball for Gordon, and the corner delivery for Koundé's goal.
Evidence: Yamal took 6 of Barça's 23 shots, none on target, and supplied 3 chances that Soria had to save or that went in (26', 53', 73'). LaLiga match centre (commentary) · FotMob match page

The idea: Keep both wingers wide to stretch the back five, let Rodri as a Deep-Lying Playmaker switch play, and press the centre-backs as soon as they try to dribble out. You need a winger who can create from the right (Yamal as a Wide Playmaker) and a striker who presses.
What FM26 can't copy: FM26 can't reproduce a goal after 78 seconds or a defender losing the ball in his own box; the match was shaped by both.

What if? Replay it with a different plan
Our best alternative plan: Formation 4-3-3, Pedri on at half-time (for Gavi). Keep the high press that won the second goal, add a second runner into the box and bring Pedri on at half-time. It wouldn't change the result; it would turn some of the 23 shots into clearer chances. It moves FC Barcelona's win chance from 82% to 84% (xG 1.93–0.14 becomes 2.11–0.14). Try your own changes to formation, pressing, approach and substitutions.
The game-changer FC Barcelona needed
Raphinha
Barça had 23 shots but only 1.93 xG, about 0.08 per shot. Raphinha's runs off the last defender's shoulder are the movement a deep back five struggles with, and he had 12 league goals in seven games before the break.
Harry Kane
Against five defenders many of Barça's shots were blocked or came from outside the box. Kane finishes crosses and cut-backs in a crowded box, and when he drops off to link play he drags a centre-back out of the back five.
What the analysts said

“He's different from Raphinha, yes, but today he showed his quality and I'm very happy for him.”Hansi Flick on Gabriel Jesus (Yahoo Sports)
“Playing with these players is very easy too: they all play very well and always have the ball.”Gabriel Jesus to DAZN (Goal)
“Hemos encajado en el primer minuto y el segundo gol es un regalo.” (We conceded in the first minute, and the second goal is a gift.)José Bordalás (EFE via Infobae)
Getafe came to defend, and Barça scored before they could.
What's happening. Barcelona beat Getafe 3–0 without Raphinha, with seven changes from the last league game. Gordon scored after 78 seconds and Gabriel Jesus added a second after winning the ball in Getafe's box. Eight league wins from eight equals the club's best start, set under Martino in 2013/14.
How it works. Against a five-man back line, the trick is to make the defenders' job awkward before the block settles. An early goal does that, because the deep side now has to come out. Barça then kept five players high to pin the back five and pressed every attempt to play out. The cost of facing a 5-4-1 is that the box is crowded, so many shots are blocked or rushed.
What the shots say. One reading: total control. Getafe had four shots, almost no expected goals, and only three touches in Barça's box. The other reading: Barça's chances were thin for 23 shots, under 0.1 expected goals each, less than half their usual rate. Three goals from under two expected goals flatters the finishing a little. Getafe's mistakes gave them the second goal.
