The idea: Load the left: an inside forward drifting in, an attacking full-back overlapping outside him and an attacking midfielder arriving for the cut-back. It needs a full-back with the legs to overlap all game and a deep playmaker to feed that side.

What if? Replay it with a different plan
Our best alternative plan: Güler on at 46' (for Diomande), Tchouaméni on at 46' (for Valverde). Keep the first-half plan, but make the half-time changes about control: Tchouaméni for Valverde and Güler straight away, not at 72'. After half-time Real Madrid lost the ball and the rhythm, and Rayo Vallecano hit the post and scored. When Güler came on he made five key passes in 18 minutes and set up the fourth goal. Mourinho said he made a difference to the stability of the game. At half-time he was the obvious way to keep the ball.

Real Madrid's second half was a control problem: Rayo Vallecano pressed and Madrid lost the ball in their own half for the goal. Vitinha receives under pressure, turns and keeps it moving, so a 3–0 lead is managed with the ball, not by Courtois's saves.

Real Madrid had this won by the 35th minute. The penalty and Carreras's goal came three minutes apart, and all three first-half goals were built down the left. The final numbers look comfortable: 2.62 xG to 1.21, 24 shots to 18, 44 touches in Rayo Vallecano's box to 23 (FotMob).
The second half is the worry. Valverde went off at half-time as a precaution, and Real Madrid's control went with him. Rayo Vallecano hit the post, scored when Madrid lost the ball in their own half, and made Courtois work. Part of the Bernabéu whistled (Goal). Mourinho called it a 45-minute game and put it down to tired legs and minds, not to the plan.
Mourinho describes his team as one that wins the ball back fiercely and attacks quickly. That was the first half exactly. What this Real Madrid side doesn't yet have is a way to rest with the ball. The only calm spell after the break came from Güler's 18-minute cameo, with five key passes and the assist for the fourth goal.
