The high press: it wins goals, and when it's beaten Sunderland run straight through
- City pressed high all game. Cherki's goal came straight from it: Sunderland tried to play out and City's press forced the mistake (Read Man City).
- Beat the first wave and the space is huge. Sunderland found three routes: Le Fée releasing Brobbey through the middle, combinations down the right with Meunier, and quick set pieces from Xhaka. Brobbey's first two goals came from the first two.
- Set pieces were a problem at both ends. Sunderland made 1.81 xG from set plays to City's 0.43 (The False 9). Maresca said the second and third goals both came from free kicks: "too easy".
- No control after going 4–2. Brobbey scored again two minutes after Semenyo's second. Dias cleared off the line after Donnarumma missed a cross (Sky). Sunderland had 17 shots and 9 on target, both more than City.

Five goals from 2.82 xG, three conceded from 3.57: City won the finishing, not the game.
On chances created, Sunderland won this. They had 17 shots to 16, 9 on target to 6, and 3.57 xG to 2.82 (FotMob/Opta). Other providers made the gap even wider. City's own site showed 4.15 for Sunderland. City scored five because Fernández's free kick and Semenyo's two strikes were far better than the chances they came from, and because Roefs had a bad afternoon.
Look at how the goals against came. Two were Le Fée or Meunier getting the ball behind a City side that had pushed up to press. Two were free kicks, one taken quickly before City were set. This wasn't bad luck. Sunderland's plan was to beat the first press and then attack a back line with nobody holding the space in front of it. It worked all afternoon: 1.81 xG from set plays alone, and a Dias clearance off the line at 4–3.
In the other four league games City conceded 3.68 xG in total, so this looks like an outlier. It is also the first league opponent this season that attacked City at pace instead of sitting deep. Maresca knows it. His own summary was that he'd rather win 1–0, and that two goals were "too easy".
