- A slow start against a deep block. Norwich City sat deep (a 4-4-2, per The Guardian) and hoped to break. Clement said his side played "in a good structure", and it was 0–0 for 28 minutes.
- The full-backs and wide players made the chances. Three goals came from wide deliveries: O'Reilly's back-post dink for the first, Aït-Nouri's pass for Samba's second, and O'Reilly's low cross for McAidoo.

What if? Replay it with a different plan
Our best alternative plan: Formation 4-3-3, Semenyo on at 60' (for Allan). An extra runner from midfield against the deep block to shorten the flat first 28 minutes, and Semenyo for the last half-hour. Small gains: the reserves already won 5–0. Manchester City were flat for 28 minutes against a deep block and only broke through when Grimshaw flapped at a cross. Semenyo's running at full-backs and shooting from outside the box are the tools for that phase, and he sat on the bench all night.
Pedri
Before the opener, Norwich City's two banks of four closed the middle and Manchester City's control produced little. Pedri receives between the lines and plays forward on the half-turn, which is how a side opens a deep block without waiting for a goalkeeping error.

Manchester City scored five times from 1.77 xG, 14 shots and six on target (FotMob, Sky Sports). Norwich City had four shots, 0.17 xG and nothing on target. The result was never in doubt after the opener, but the margin came from finishing: Samba's curler from 20 yards, Allan's low shot after beating Field twice, and McAidoo's back-post finish.
The first goal needed help. For 28 minutes Norwich City's deep block held, and the breakthrough came when Grimshaw flapped at O'Reilly's cross. After that the game opened up. Samba dropping deep and holding the ball up made the second, and Norwich had to come out, which gave Manchester City's wide players space.
